Guaranteed fresh, sweet, anti-inflaming, anti-swelling, anti-oxidating, and simply delicious way to start the day. And. Well, it makes you taste sweeter later on, if you know what I mean. Uh, I said it.
Moving on. Pineapples are AMAZING. An individual pineapple is a collection of multiple fertilized flowers which become little fruits that join together to create the whole pineapple. Each of the eyes is actually a little fertilized flower! Also, hummingbirds are the principal pollinators (which I think is cute) , and this is why they are prohibited in Hawaii to avoid the development of undesired seeds in pineapples.
Fresh raw pineapple’s most important player is called bromelain: it is a very SUPER duper health promoting enzyme, called a proteolytic enzyme, which aids in digestion by breaking down protein. This is why raw pineapple juice is good as a meat marinade and tenderizer. Bromelain is a great natural anti-inflammatory and prevents swelling of all sorts. It also works to help prevent heartburn and other digestive discomforts.

Pineapples ARE PACKED with Vitamin C, which as you all may know, is a POWERFUL antioxidant. It keeps your immune system in really good shape, especially in these times of change of season, increasing your resistance against colds, the flu, and other infectious nasty viruses that are flying around. Vitamin C is the body’s primary water-soluble antioxidant, defending all aqueous areas of the body against free radicals that attack and damage normal cells.
They are a GREAT source of MANGANESE, and Vitamin B1 : Stated simply, these two are essential for ENERGY PRODUCTION. Manganese also promotes strong bones and protects cells from oxidation.
Adding on to the-already-amazing-benefits of pineapples is the ability to get a healthy oral cavity. Pineapples are acidic in nature which prevent any bacterial growth in the mouth, decreasing plaque growth. It also strengthens the gums, keeping teeth super strong.
CLEARS the LUNGS (ahem.. smokers): Eating or drinking fresh pineapple juice prevents mucous accumulation in the throat and clears the lungs.
Sweet to know..
The area closer to the base of the pineapple has more sugar content and thus tastes way better and is more tender than the rest of the pineapple, so now you know which part should be your share.
Pineapples grow and ripen in the plant. Once plucked out, no method will help to ripen it further. It will remain the same way it was when plucked. SO, when you buy them, make sure to ALWAYS smell them! The taste and sweetness of the fruit depends on the smell of the fruit. Should smell SWEET.
THE PERFECT COMBO:
PINEAPPLE, COCONUT OIL, and SALT
The reason why I eat pineapple with coconut oil and sometimes even add a pinch of “sal de maras” which is the peruvian “himalayan Salt’ is FIRST AND FOREMOST because I love the combination of flavors, (it tastes like the Caribbean in my mouth) and secondly, ESPECIALLY in the morning, adding fat to fruit is good idea to control blood sugar, i.e, the fat slows down the absorption of the sugar of the pineapple into the bloodstream, thus preventing a quick spike, which tends to be followed by a quick crash. Also, coconut oil also makes the fruit bowl way more satisfying and provides more long-term energy for the day. Little oil goes a long way, just add about 2 tsp for a bowl of pineapple chunks.
Please cut your chunks smaller than what they look in the above picture. You dont want to end up with sores at the corners of your mouth like I did. The itchiness and soreness are caused by the super-powerful bromelain enzyme, which just as it breaks down protein, it seems like it breaks down your mouth too.
THE LESSON: cut chunks small enough and don’t rub the pineapple all over your mouth.
