I NEVER wear orange, and by never I mean NEVER. I actually had to buy this shirt for this shoot. And you know what? As soon as I put it on, my world turned brighter, and I’m not kidding. Color has power. It has a very specific kind of wavelength, energy and vibration. We usually don’t realize it, but if affects us deeply.
Today we’re going to talk orange. Orange stimulates and energizes us; it literally warms us up inside. Orange is the color of the juice from the previous post (CLICK HERE FOR RECIPE) that’s loaded with beta-carotene; the orange pigment that doesn’t only give your skin and face a golden sexy radiance, but also fills you up in a more unconscious level through its color. On a physical level, beta carotene is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells (even from cancer), boosts the immune system, and helps to keep the reproductive system healthy. Similarly, in the chakra system the color orange corresponds to the second chakra (Swadhistana) which also impacts sexuality and reproductive function, but in a slightly different way: it is the energetic center and “home” for sexual and creative energy in the body. It is the center where joy, desire, pleasure and creativity all coexist together.
Buddhists call this center “hara”, the center of your power and where your latent vital force lives; it is where you connect with the deepest voice of your self; with the deepest stillness and inner wisdom. Here, according to Zen masters, is where we find bliss.
Let’s take a closer look at this and its relationship to the second chakra.
The Chakra System:
The chakra system originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC in the oldest text called the Vedas. Chakra means wheel. A chakra is an energetic center in the body and a doorway through which we perceive reality. There are seven basic chakras, and they all exist within the subtle body. Through modern physiology we can see that these seven chakras even correspond exactly to the seven main nerve ganglia in the spinal column.
According to these texts, consciousness lies dormant at the root center or base of the spine, at the site of the first chakra, or Muladhara chakra. Mula means root. The priority here is physical preservation. When you perceive reality from this point ,you are concerned mainly with basic necessities of life: food, shelter and safety. Money is prime interest. Of course, grounding in the material world is necessary if one is to move upward toward full spiritual and self realization; however, in today’s world where money is the main goal, many of us are stuck in this first chakra and in a very basic level of consciousness. We strive for beauty and obsess about what we’re going to eat, how we are going to burn the calories from what we will eat, and then how we’ll be able to tone our legs and abs. We live bound to the terrestrial drama, obsessing over it, and suffering because of it.
We become attached to the most basic material elements in life (i.e. food, drinks and drugs) and we let them control us, manipulate our brain chemistry, take over our energy, and drive our sense of wellbeing. We allow ourselves to be “swinged” like a pendulum from side to side from uncontrollable drinking nights to flat apathetic hangover days. Another issue with getting trapped in the first chakra is that we can easily settle in comfort, and then not bother to look any deeper into ourselves and the meaning of our lives (because that would require too much effort).
Truth is, this sluggishness and laziness to do deeper into life makes us suffer because we get stuck in the most basic level of human evolution; we are trapped in the first phase. Your consciousness is crying and calling at you to ascend, but you just play deaf to its call.
- Let’s try to get out of the wheel of suffering of pleasure and attachment and preferences of the material world.
- Let’s reverse the process of dense unconscious materialism. Let’s elevate and transform it.
- The road to cosmic consciousness is through the material world, but not in the material world. We have to use the material world wisely in order to find our way back to the source, which is limitless boundless joy.

We have stated that the first chakra has to do with survival, so once your connection to the earth is steady and stable and basic needs are met, energy is allowed to flow freely upwards to the second chakra, and this is where I want to stop (for now). The second chakra is the center in us that seeks pleasure and enjoyment, and it is where our creativity and sexuality live. It is the center where we are able birth, nurture and express our creativity in the form of any creative work, art, and/or procreation. Sexual energy is what fuels this center, and it is one of the most powerful energies we have, which means we OUGHT to learn how to use it and not mis-use it. We can use sexual energy and convert it into creativity and self expression; that is, we can sublimate this force by directing it by moving it up into higher realms.
The Swadhisthana chakra is also the center of the water element; of feeling emotion, joy, enthusiasm, pleasure, sensuality, intimacy, and connection.Orange energy is very sensual. Living a life guided by orange color transforms even the most mundane daily experiences into pleasurable experiences.
This center has to do with our ability to find pleasure in life, in our own seat, in our center,in our own hara, and in every moment. Ask yourself: Where is your life sensuality? Where is your ability to find pleasure in every moment?
When the second Chakra (Swadhisthana) is blocked we experience guilt, sorrow, envy, jealousy, stiff lower back, restlessness, confusion, and lack of sexual desire or pleasure.
The color orange and the second chakra affect sexuality, genital area, reproductive organs, pulse rate, gall bladder, bowel and lower intestine, food allergies, eating disorders.
The second chakra is located at the area of the hips and pelvis, which is also the place where unresolved relationships live. As mentioned before, this center is associated with our sexuality and creativity, which also encompasses our romantic, creative, and/or business relationships. Unresolved issues with the people in this realm can hinder and zap our energy BIG TIME. Examine whether you’re running away from these, and instead deal with these difficult relationships by using unconditional love so as to not get caught up in guilt and regret. If you can resolve things with one person, you can resolve it with everyone. It is important to purify sexual and creative relationships by letting go of anger blame and resentment.
Something to do about it (yes, you can use your body): FORWARD BENDS
Forward bends activate the second chakra. Forward bending takes us into our past, teaching us to resolve old issues by letting go of negative emotions that become trapped in the hamstrings, the hips, and the back. Forward bending is a gesture of humility; of bending over in order to look back and let go. This forward movement allows us to purify our center of creative energy so that stagnant or stuck energy can begin to flow freely again, and move upwards. Its a matter of allowing stagnant feelings to move, so that love moves in.
Folding forward and sitting with the past also allows us to remember who we are. That is, sometimes the past can serve us as grounding material. It can help us remember what we wanted, and what we’ve always essentially wanted. It’s like cleaning your closet, and you realize actually have so many awesome clothes that you’ve forgotten about. Now you just wear the same pair of jeans, when really you have so much beautiful stuff! It’s like we sometimes have to go back , in order to go forward; sometimes we have to go back in order to remember who we are and what we want, so that we can go forward in a more energized and empowered way.
Fold forward, go deeper into the hips, go back into the past and remember who you are and where you come from. Tap in with that silent still point inside.
Become, sharp, conscious and practice cultivating awareness, so that you can penetrate reality with presence, and your own gifts of your creative strength. Let’s dare to live a full rich life, filled with orange light.
